Russian Navy to Re-open Bases at Syrian Ports
For first time since the fall of the Soviet Empire,
Russia plans to establish permanent bases in Syria as part of a
large arms deal between the two countries. Reports indicate that the
Russia Navy plans to resume operations at the Syrian ports of Tartus
and Latakia. The port agreement and recent arms deal were made
possible after the two parties resolved a dispute over Syria's $11
billion debt to Moscow. Israeli defense officials fear Russian ships
will carry out spying missions on Israel's latest communications and
weapon systems.
